Holidays To Greece – Exploring The Caves

This year, why not skip the average package holidays to Greece and explore some of the country’s lesser known attractions - the caves. You've be spoilt for choice with over 7,500 caves on offer, so to help you narrow down your options, we've picked a few of the best.

It wouldn’t be a Greece holiday without a bit of traditional mythology chucked into the mix, so for those who love a good story, head to Diktaian Cave near the village of Psirho in Crete. It is the site where Zeus chose to give his divine rules to his son, Minos, as well as supposedly been the place where he was born.

The cave in the heart of Agios Nikolaos might be more up your street if you prefer modern history. During the Nazi occupation, the cave was used by members of the Resistance and it provides a fascinating insight into an often overlooked part of Greek history.

You may prefer Saint Sophia just south of Chania, if you aren’t such an intrepid explorer or this is your first foray into the wonderful world of cavernous holidays in Greece. The cave is easily accessible with steps down to the wide entrance, which allows enough light in that the cave is never dark.

Greece's largest cave, Perama, located just outside Ioannina, should definitely be visited if your holidays to Greece are restricted to the mainland. You’ll find several small lakes and impressive rock formations guaranteed to boggle the mind, formed from an underground river.

If none of these take your fancy, there are another 7,496 to choose from, many of which still haven’t been properly explored. Your itinerary on your next holidays to Greece should certainly include a trip to some of these fascinating caves. A speleologist may well be found hidden inside you yet.
